Collaborators

Collaboration is at the heart of our work

We create original work, which has grown out of our questions, not answers. This curiosity takes us on a deeper journey and so our projects evolve over many years.

For example The Love Calendar writing and film project (2012) opened a conversation with other Artists about how we share love stories, which then evolved into of The Love Project – seeing the history of a place through its love stories (2014), which also contributed to the development of The Amazon Dance Project – a course for young women in developing coping and resilience, safety and relationships (2016). These creative journeys are our contribution to our community.

A Love Calendar

A Love Calendar: 'A Love Calendar ' is a journey through Love over...a year...a lifetime...This dance film (approx 15 mins) is a first time collaboration between Creator and Director Amanda J. Mortlock, Performer Manuela Benini, Film-maker and Editor Daniel Williams with an original sound score by Andrew Deakin.

Creative collaborations with visual artists, film-makers, writers, poets, choreographers, composers and makers both supports and challenges our work. More recently, we have also collaborated with Clinical Psychologists, Life Coaches and Dance Movement Psychotherapists, which has brought a new voice to our work.

When working with communities we collaborate with them to develop a system, a language, an approach, which supports them in contributing to the creation of the work as an equal partner. For Artists this approach opens up new ideas and possibilities and the opportunity to understand how to meet the needs of families and communities through Art and Culture.

Our collaborations with Universities within the region seek to engage undergraduates in the real life needs of communities and demonstrate the transformational power of the Arts.

We have supported artists at various stages in their careers in developing their ideas and practice through Choreographic Labs, International Dance Intensives, Commissions, Research and Development and support their ongoing development where possible.

The projects with DARE allowed students to pass on their passion and commitment to dance and illustrated to the younger boys that dance is a potential study and career choice.

”Working with the boy's groups with DARE DANCE has been a privilege. At EdgeFWD we advocate for the benefits of dance and work to challenge preconceptions and stereotypes associated with the male dancer. The projects with DARE allowed students to pass on their passion and commitment to dance and illustrated to the younger boys that dance is a potential study and career choice. In each project there was a wonderful camaraderie between the dancers and EdgeFWD that led to the creation of high quality and generous work. Memorable moments include the tender partner work in our first piece 'Brothers' and the reception given to the groups on performance days. "

DARE has provided me with many opportunities to develop my professional work through use of studio space to support my own creative projects as Hawk Dance Theatre...”

"DARE DANCE first began supporting me in 2015 through various opportunities. As an emerging artist in the North, it was important to gain strong relationships and DARE has been a huge contributor to my artistic development over the past 18 months. DARE has provided me with many opportunities to develop my professional work through use of studio space to support my own creative projects as Hawk Dance Theatre, as well as allowing me to grow throughout delivering a varied creative learning programme - within schools and their own studio classes. I am pleased to have developed a strong relationship with DARE and am grateful for your on going support."

Active CumbriaActive Cumbria

"DARE has initiated, sustained and developed dance opportunities for young people in Furness in partnership with Active Cumbria (formerly Cumbria Sport). We have been confident in commissioning DARE to deliver programmes and support DARE’s vision through joint funding applications to Arts Council for Digital Dance Programmes, CPD programmes for dance practitioners and youth dance programmes."

As Senior Manager for Active Cumbria I recognise and value the contribution that Dare makes to the local community by offering an extensive range of dance activities and opportunities.

"We supported DARE’s youth and community programmes 2002-2008 through investment from Furness Schools Sport Co-ordinator funding for Barrow B-boys a three year breakdance project working with professional dancers from Manchester and London; The Big 12 hour Dance project in Bollywood, Hip-Hop and  Afro-Caribean dance styles; Dance Residencies with professional dance companies and after-school provision.

In 2005 we worked in partnership with DARE to expand their successful Primary School Dance Residency programme to include a performance event at the forum theatre in Barrow and to extend the programme into West Cumbria with a performance at Whitehaven Civic Hall.

In 2008 we worked with DARE to develop their CPD programmes for dance practitioners and their Network for Dance in Education to sustain the work undertaken in Schools.

Since 2010 DARE has contributed to dance development across the county through its role as Cumbria Cultural Education Champion for Dance with Arts Council and as County Dance Co-ordinator with Active Cumbria.

As Senior Manager for Active Cumbria I recognise and value the contribution that Dare makes to the local community by offering an extensive range of dance activities and opportunities.  We have enjoyed working with them over the years on a variety of interventions which have always culminated in an achievement of outputs and outcomes"

Roose Community Primary SchoolRoose Community Primary School

"Roose School have been involved with various projects with DARE DANCE for ten years. We have performed in the U Dance Festival as well as other dance projects such as Big Dance 2012, linked to the Olympics."

The children were able to perform and express themselves on stages of different sizes, up to and including outside Liverpool 1.

"This dance in particular gave the children a totally new experience as we travelled to Carlisle to perform with other groups and watch the Olympic torch arrive. We also got to experience dance on a large scale when we took the performance to Liverpool to link up with groups from all over the region.

The children were able to perform and express themselves on stages of different sizes, up to and including outside Liverpool 1. They got to visit and explore cities, collaborate with other people and make dance a part of their curriculum. Their educational lives were made richer by the experiences DARE DANCE helped to provide.

Working with the professionals at DARE DANCE has allowed me to develop my own confidence in the teaching of dancing. I am certainly more confident, able and willing to help children to create their own dances and movements and lead these lessons. Taking part in dance festivals has given the children a real focus and purpose for each dance and no matter how nervous they are, each and every one comes off stage, smiling and wanting to do it again."

Furness AcademyFurness Academy

"Over the last two years, Dance has been an area we have been developing at Furness Academy. With help from the teachers at DARE DANCE I have been able to develop my confidence as a Dance teacher."

The students enjoyed the experiences they gained from the programme. They felt it helped them to develop their knowledge of Dance and their practical ability.

"DARE provided our BTEC Dance students with the opportunity to experience a variety of different styles of dance, which was essential as part of their course. The students at Furness Academy also took up the offer of performing in the U.Dance festival over two consecutive years. On both occasions DARE provided an experienced Dance teacher to assist with developing the performance for the show. The students thoroughly enjoyed working with the staff from DARE and were grateful for the chance to perform on stage.

Students from year 9 also completed a 12-week Arts Award programme, culminating in a final performance as part of the DARE DANCE showcase. The DARE DANCE teacher delivered the programme.  The students enjoyed the experiences they gained from the programme.  They felt it helped them to develop their knowledge of Dance and their practical ability.

The support provided by DARE from both a staff and student point of view has always been first class and we look forward to working with them again in the future."

Brewery Arts CentreBrewery Arts Centre

"The Brewery Arts Centre as well as Brewery Youth Arts have benefited greatly in our partnership with DARE DANCE over the last 15 years including building capacity for our first full-time Dance Development Officer in 2004. This new post allowed us the opportunity to develop a relationship across the region which has gone from strength to strength"

We have developed our ambitions for Dance together and DANCE DANCE have supported development of our dance staff through Choreographic Labs, International Artists Residencies and Regional Artist Forums.

"We have developed our ambitions for Dance together and DARE DANCE have supported development of  our dance staff through Choreographic Labs, International Artists Residencies and Regional Artist Forums. In 2008 we worked together to form a Strategic Development practitioner group to contribute to the Local Arts Development Agency's Dance Steering Group.

Our recent collaboration Now and Then brought together 100 Children and Young People from diverse backgrounds to create and perform a new work on the on the site of the Historic House at Fell Foot, National Trust.   We have gained a great deal from working with DARE DANCE and it allows us to aim towards a more joined up future, where high quality dance provision is accessible across Cumbria. We hope that our relationship with DARE DANCE will continue to grow and develop and that we will carry on creating exciting and innovative work together."

St George's C of E Primary SchoolSt George's C of E Primary School

thank you for the inspirational workshops you facilitated for the children of St Georges School last week. I was privileged to attend the whole of the three day program, and experience firsthand the wonderful work being done

"As a governor at St Georges it was extremely satisfying to witness the huge benefit the children derived.  I was truly impressed. It’s not easy to judge the success of such a “soft” subject but the buzz among the kids was tangible throughout. They loved every minute and this was reflected in the progress they made, and in the quality of their work. Something I observed on the final day summed it up perfectly for me; one of the children stood back to admire his completed project and said, “I can’t believe I’ve written that.” The look of pride on his face was a picture.

On behalf of the school, kids, parents and myself, many thanks for a hugely rewarding experience."

"The ‘Now and Then’ project at Fell Foot was a unique opportunity to express our natural and historic environments, through a medium not normally associated with the park."

This was the first time we worked with DARE DANCE and are looking forward to building a long-lasting partnership

"It was a fabulous chance for local schools and communities to experience and relate to Fell Foot from a wholly different perspective, unlocking the hidden stories of generations past and present and assimilating with the natural identity of this important site.

This was the first time we worked with DARE DANCE and are looking forward to building a long-lasting partnership."

"DARE DANCE has a long and productive relationship with our school. They work knowledgably and closely with staff and children so that dance remains an important part of a broad and balanced curriculum."

They also share a love of dance with the children, which is contagious.

"This demonstrates DARE’s ability to focus in on the needs of the teachers and their flexibility and awareness of how to effectively teach children of different ages and abilities.

Last year DARE worked closely with our Year 2 children helping them create a dance of their own. This dance was to feature in the U Dance festival. The group was inclusive and all the children involved gained in confidence, esteem and creativity. This was a wonderful learning opportunity and the children’s enthusiasm was recognised when we were nominated for and won the prestigious U.Dance nationwide award for Excellent Performance. DARE DANCE provide valuable INSET training which has enabled members of our staff to take on board the skills learnt during this training and bring these into school enabling staff and children to create dances which enhance the curriculum as well as the children’s self esteem and creativity. Dowdales School Dowdales School

"Dowdales School has worked collaboratively with DARE DANCE over the past few years with a variety of projects. A couple of years ago we identified a need for support with encouraging boys in dance and worked with DARE DANCE to develop this area further."

This project has been a great foundation for our boys dance club as 80% of the boys involved have remained members and it has encouraged a large amount of other students to become involved taking our group total from 10 to 20.

"DARE DANCE set up a project with a Debbie Milner Senior Lecturer and EdgeFwd from Edge Hill University whereby boys in years 7 and 8 had the opportunity to take part in taster workshops at Dowdales School and at DARE DANCE studio.  Selected boys worked with Debbie and EdgeFwd to devise a dance piece which they performed at the Cumbria U Dance Festival at the Forum, Barrow and at the Brewery, Kendal and within our own school dance concert. This project has been a great foundation for our boys dance club as 80% of the boys involved have remained members and it has encouraged a large amount of other students to become involved taking our group total from 10 to 20.

We also worked with DARE DANCE who offered taster workshops for  the Lowry CAT scheme. This allowed us to identify the gifted and talented students in our school and provide them with further opportunities to develop their skills in dance at a higher level. Some of our students have gone on to successfully audition for this scheme and others have gained a lot of information about local youth dance companies that they can join whilst learning to develop their technical and creative skills which has supported our GCSE work. As the only school in the Furness area who offer a dance curriculum and GCSE qualification it is fantastic to have the contacts, support and opportunities that DARE DANCE can provide. I look forward to continue working with DARE DANCE to provide development for the young people in our school and area."

Inspiring BarrowInspiring Barrow

"DARE DANCE have worked with us as a delivery partner since the start of the project. As a consequence of their long history of engaging and working with young people in Furness, we asked Dare to put together a programme of Dance activities which would not only provide young people with a range of new skills and improved physical health but would also enable them to explore their aspirations for the future and the skills they will need to reach their goals."

We have been delighted with the outcomes of the project, with over one hundred young people taking part but more importantly, the levels of impact we have seen.

"From the evidence provided it is clear the activities have improved confidence and self esteem and for some young people it has also provided them with an opportunity to learn about opportunities in the creative arts, which they otherwise would not have been aware of."
